How to sell event tickets online with mobile money in East Africa

The short answerCreate the event in Happa, set a ticket price, and buyers pay by mobile money or from their Happa Wallet. Each buyer gets a QR ticket you scan at the door. Payments work in Tanzanian, Kenyan and Ugandan shillings; withdrawals are currently in Tanzanian shillings.

What buyers see

A buyer opens your event, taps to get a ticket and pays. They can pay from their Happa Wallet, or by mobile money: they enter their mobile money number and approve the prompt on their phone. The app shows the price, the service fee and any mobile money provider fee before they pay, and the ticket appears in their account once payment is confirmed.

What you set up

  1. Create the event. Add the title, date, place and description. Paid, public events need a one-time organizer verification.
  2. Set the ticket price in Tanzanian, Kenyan or Ugandan shillings. You can edit pricing later.
  3. Design the ticket. Choose an accent colour and background image, add a note, set how many times a ticket can be scanned, and decide whether tickets can be transferred.
  4. Share the event link. Buyers pay and receive their QR ticket in the app.

At the door

Scan each QR ticket with your phone. You can invite scanners so several people work the entrance, scanning keeps working when the signal is weak, and check-ins sync afterwards. Tickets can be limited to one scan, or several for multi-day events.

Getting paid

Ticket proceeds are protected until 24 hours after the event ends. After that the released balance can be withdrawn from your Happa Wallet. You can follow tickets sold, checked in and revenue on the event’s revenue screen, and export event data to Google Sheets.
